Risks and Complications of Non-Surgical Cosmetic Treatments

Every cosmetic treatment carries some degree of risk, and specific complications may be associated with certain procedures. While non-surgical cosmetic medicine treatments are generally considered low risk when performed by qualified professionals, it is important to understand the possible side effects and complications that can occur:

Infection
Although non-surgical procedures are minimally invasive, there is still a small risk of infection whenever the skin barrier is disrupted. Symptoms may include increasing redness, swelling, warmth, tenderness, pus, or delayed healing at the treatment site. Strict hygiene and sterile techniques are followed during your treatment, and proper aftercare is essential to minimise this risk. Early medical treatment may be required if an infection develops.

Bruising and Swelling
Mild bruising and swelling are among the most common side effects following cosmetic injectables and skin treatments. These reactions are usually temporary and resolve within a few days to two weeks, depending on the treatment and individual healing response. Applying cold compresses and following post-treatment instructions can help reduce these effects.

Pain and Discomfort
Some temporary discomfort, tenderness, sensitivity, or a mild stinging sensation may occur during or after treatment. The level of discomfort varies depending on the procedure performed and individual pain tolerance. Most symptoms are short lived and manageable, however, persistent or worsening pain should be reviewed by scheduling a follow up with the clinic. Should the clinic be closed and symptoms worsen please seek further medical care.

Redness and Skin Irritation
Temporary redness, itching, dryness, or irritation may occur following treatments such as skin needling, laser procedures, chemical peels, or injectables. These effects are generally mild and improve as the skin heals. In some cases, sensitive skin may react more strongly and require additional care.

Bleeding or Hematoma
Minor bleeding or pinpoint bleeding can occasionally occur during injectable or skin-based procedures. In some cases, blood may collect beneath the skin, forming a hematoma (a localized collection of blood), which may appear as swelling, tenderness, or bruising. Most resolve naturally, though medical assessment may occasionally be required.

Allergic or Hypersensitivity Reactions
Some patients may experience allergic or hypersensitivity reactions to products used during treatment, including dermal fillers, topical agents, antiseptics, or anaesthetic creams. Reactions can range from mild redness and itching to more severe swelling or inflammatory responses. It is important to disclose any known allergies or previous reactions prior to treatment.

Lumps, Nodules, or Uneven Results
Certain treatments, particularly injectable procedures, may occasionally result in temporary lumps, firmness, asymmetry, or uneven cosmetic outcomes. In many cases these settle naturally over time or can be corrected with additional treatment. Open communication and realistic expectations are important parts of the consultation process.

Vascular Complications
Although rare, injectable treatments may unintentionally affect blood vessels, potentially reducing blood flow to surrounding tissues. Symptoms may include severe pain, blanching (whitening of the skin), unusual discoloration, or delayed healing. In extremely rare cases, more serious complications may occur. Prompt recognition and immediate treatment are critical.

Pigmentation Changes
Some skin treatments may trigger temporary or, rarely, longer-lasting pigmentation changes. This may present as darkening (hyperpigmentation) or lightening (hypopigmentation) of the treated skin, particularly in patients with certain skin types or after sun exposure. Following sun protection advice is essential during the healing process.

Scarring
While uncommon in non-surgical cosmetic medicine, some treatments carry a small risk of scarring, particularly if healing is impaired or complications such as infection occur. Individual skin type, genetics, and aftercare all influence healing outcomes.

Unsatisfactory Cosmetic Outcome
As with all aesthetic procedures, results cannot be guaranteed. Individual healing responses, anatomy, lifestyle factors, and biological variation can affect treatment outcomes. Additional treatments or maintenance procedures may sometimes be required to achieve or maintain desired results.

Rare but Serious Complications
Although extremely uncommon, serious complications can occur with cosmetic medicine procedures. These may include severe allergic reactions, tissue injury, vascular compromise, or other unexpected medical events. Your safety is our highest priority, and all treatments are performed with careful assessment, appropriate protocols, and ongoing monitoring.
